The Child Who Finds It HardLuke 14:13

Nobody Writes These For Us

This message is for the mother of a child who uses a wheelchair, who is written out of every piece about family trips she has ever read and wants to be addressed directly

Every article about family trips is written to somebody else.

You have read a hundred of them. They talk about hiking with children and packing the car and finding the hidden places, and every single one assumes a family whose bodies all work the same way.

And they never say so. That is the part that gets tiring. Nobody writes a paragraph explaining that this piece is not for you. It just quietly is not, and you work that out somewhere around the third sentence, and you close it.

So let me be direct. This one is for you.

Your son uses a wheelchair. That is the first fact about your family's days out, and it is not an obstacle in this article, it is the design brief.

And I am not going to give you a list of accessible places, because I do not know your county and because a list is not what is missing. What is missing is a way of thinking about the day that does not start with somebody else's plan and then try to squeeze him into it.

Nobody Writes These For Us

Call the poor, the maimed, the lame

There is an instruction of Christ's about who gets invited to things, and the specificity of it is what makes it worth having here.

But when thou makest a feast, call the poor, the maimed, the lame, the blind. (Luke 14:13, King James Version)

You have a guest list in the written word with your son named on it by category, and no gathering has ever once been designed properly without people like him in view from the start. Luke 14:13 names four kinds of people as the ones to invite rather than as people to accommodate, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that a fact about a Saturday rather than a nice sentiment.

Read what it is actually correcting. The context is a man throwing a feast and inviting the people who could reciprocate. Christ tells him to invite the people who cannot.

And notice: they are not added to the list. They are the list. The invitation is not extended to include them. It is built around them.

You are not somebody's afterthought in the kingdom, and no day that had to be adapted for your son has once been the day God would have designed. It is written that the feast is to be made for the poor, the maimed, the lame and the blind by name, which is a design instruction rather than an act of inclusion, and the Spirit of God is what settles that in a mother who has spent nine years adapting.

That is the whole difference this article turns on, and it is a difference you already know in your body. An adapted day is a day built for other people that you have negotiated your way into. A designed day is a day that was yours from the first decision.

You are able to have a day that was yours from the first decision, and every adapted afternoon has never once been the same kind of thing. The Holy Spirit is the one who lets a woman stop being grateful for accommodation, and Luke 14 puts the names on the invitation rather than in the footnotes.

Design from the chair outward

Now the practical part, and it is a reordering of how the planning happens.

At the moment, I would guess it goes like this. Somebody suggests somewhere. Then the working out begins: researching access, making a call, finding out about the parking and the surface and the bathroom, and by the end of that the tiredness has arrived and the day already feels like work.

That is adapting. And it is exhausting because you are doing the design work that the place should have done, every single time, for free.

You are able to stop doing somebody else's design work, and refusing to do it has never once been you giving up on going anywhere. The Spirit of God is what shows a person which labor was never theirs, and it is written that the feast itself is built around the people who were named.

So invert it. Start with the four things that actually decide whether a day works for your household, and only then pick a place.

The surface. The distance from the parking spot to the place itself. The bathroom. And the exit, meaning how quickly the day can end if it stops working.

Those four. Decide what your household actually needs on each one, write it down once, and then it is a filter you apply rather than a research project you run.

You are able to write the requirements once and reuse them forever, and doing that has never once been you limiting where this family can go. It is written that the poor and the lame are called to the feast rather than fitted into it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who is present when a mother stops starting from scratch.

And here is the part that is about him rather than about logistics. A day designed from his chair outward is a day he arrives at as a guest rather than as a problem that was solved.

Children know the difference. He has been in the second kind of day many times.

You are able to give him a day he is the guest at, and that has never once depended on anywhere becoming more accessible than it currently is. The Spirit of God is with a boy on a smooth path who is not costing anybody anything, and Luke 14 has him on the invitation by name.

One day, designed, not adapted

So here is the assignment.

Plan one outing designed around his chair from the first decision. Not adapted after it.

Practically: write your four requirements down first, before any place is named. Surface, distance, bathroom, exit. Be specific and be honest, including about what you can physically do.

You are able to name the requirements before the destination, and putting them first has never once been you narrowing this family's life. Luke 14:13 puts the guests before the feast is planned, and the Spirit of God is with a woman writing four lines on a piece of paper at a kitchen table.

Then find somewhere that already meets them, and here is the test of whether you have done this properly: if you find yourself making a phone call to ask whether something is possible, you have gone back to adapting. Choose somewhere where the answer is already obviously yes.

It will be a shorter list of places. It will also be a day nobody has to be brave about.

You are able to choose from a shorter list and have it be a whole day, and the length of the list has never once decided the size of the afternoon. It is written that the maimed and the lame are called by name, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes an ordinary smooth path into a feast.

And then go back to the same place. This is the opposite of what most travel writing says, and it is right for your household. A known place is a day where nobody is assessing anything, which is worth more than novelty.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is going out over a mother who has read a hundred articles written for somebody else.

You are not on the outside of this, and nine years of adapting other people's plans has never once meant your family was a special case. I am not handing you a list of places and I am not promising anywhere gets easier. Luke 14:13 says when thou makest a feast, call the poor, the maimed, the lame, the blind, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my saying so who puts the names on the invitation rather than in the footnotes.

And this, which is the word I came with.

You are able to plan a day built for this family from the first decision, and no piece written for households that can all keep up has ever once been a description of what you can do. Scripture builds the feast around the guests it names rather than fitting them into one, which is why the four requirements come before the place, and the Spirit of God is on that path with all of you.

Four lines. Then a place. Then go back to it.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Hundred articles written for somebody else, you do not describe this family and you never did. Luke 14:13 says call the poor, the maimed, the lame, the blind, so by the Holy Spirit I write the four requirements before I name a place, in the name of Jesus.
  2. Nine years of phone calls about doorways, you were never a fact about my son. The written word builds the feast around the guests it names rather than fitting them in afterward, and by the Holy Spirit I am done doing design work that was never mine to do.
  3. Father, You put the ones who could not reciprocate at the top of the invitation, and You named them out loud. Your word says when thou makest a feast, call the poor, so by Your Spirit I plan the day from his chair outward, and he goes ahead of us on the path.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
