We Shrank The Whole Life Around It

You did the right thing every single time, and the result is a life the size of a postage stamp.

That is the sentence I want to start with, because both halves of it are true and nobody ever says them together.

Every one of those decisions was correct. The wedding you did not go to, because it would have been four hours of noise and a late night. The trip you canceled. The Sunday lunches that stopped. The birthday parties, the two friends who stopped inviting you, the church you left because the room was too much.

Each one was a reasonable call made by a father protecting a child who genuinely could not manage the thing.

And then you looked up, at some point in the last few months, and noticed that this family does about four things now. And that you cannot remember agreeing to that.

That is the subject. Not whether the individual decisions were right. They were. It is what a hundred right decisions in a row add up to when nobody was keeping the total.

Enlarge the place of thy tent

There is a command in Isaiah fifty four that is given to somebody with every reason to be making their life smaller, and the vocabulary of it is physical and specific.

Enlarge the place of thy tent, and let them stretch forth the curtains of thine habitations: spare not, lengthen thy cords, and strengthen thy stakes. (Isaiah 54:2, King James Version)

You have a command in the written word to make the space larger, and no year of careful narrowing has ever once repealed it. Isaiah 54:2 gives four physical instructions about a dwelling rather than an encouragement about attitude, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that land on a household that has been quietly folding itself up.

Look at who it is spoken to. The chapter opens addressing somebody barren, somebody who did not bear, somebody with every practical reason to expect a small life. It is not addressed to a family with room to spare.

And the instruction is not: cope well with the size you have. It is: make it bigger, and here is how, in four steps.

You are not being told to be content with four things, and no part of that command has ever once been addressed to households with easier circumstances than yours. It is written that the enlarging is commanded to the one who had every reason to expect less, which is why the address fits this house exactly, and the Spirit of God is what puts a command like that in front of a tired father.

Now notice the last two instructions, because they are the ones that make this practical rather than reckless. Lengthen thy cords, and strengthen thy stakes.

Cords longer, stakes stronger. You do not just push the walls out. You also drive the pegs in harder, because a bigger tent needs better anchoring or the first wind takes it.

You are able to make the life bigger and the anchoring stronger in the same act, and doing both has never once been a contradiction. The Holy Spirit is the one who shows a man that enlarging includes reinforcing, and Isaiah 54 puts the cords and the stakes in the same verse as the curtains.

That is the answer to the fear that is sitting in you right now, which is that putting something back means going back to being overwhelmed. It does not, if the stakes go in at the same time.

A hundred right calls with no total

Now the practical part, and it starts with what actually happened, because it was not one bad decision.

There was never a moment where this family chose a small life. There were about a hundred moments where the small option was clearly the right one that week.

And nobody was keeping the running total. That is the whole mechanism. Each decision was assessed on its own, correctly, and the accumulation was never assessed at all.

You are not looking at a hundred mistakes, and every one of those calls has ever only been you protecting somebody who needed protecting. The Spirit of God is what separates a sum from a series in a man's mind, and it is written that the tent is to be enlarged rather than that the previous size was a sin.

So the correction is not to reverse a hundred decisions. It is to start keeping the total, and then to put one thing back.

One. Not four. Because the same accumulation that shrank the life can grow it, and it works in the same direction: one thing at a time, assessed as it comes.

You are able to grow this by one thing rather than all at once, and one has never once been too small to change the direction of a decade. It is written that the cords are lengthened and the stakes strengthened together, which is a process rather than a single move, and the Holy Spirit is the one who is patient with a household finding its way back out.

And here is how to choose which one, because this matters. Do not pick the hardest thing you gave up. Pick the thing this family misses most that costs him least.

That is usually not the big event. It is often something ordinary: eating with the same two people once a month, a particular walk, being in a room with your cousins.

You are able to choose the thing that costs him least rather than the thing that looks bravest, and choosing carefully has never once been you avoiding the real problem. The Spirit of God is what gives a father wisdom about the order of things, and Isaiah 54:2 tells him to spare not while also telling him exactly how to hold the thing down.

Name one, put it back

So here is the assignment.

Name one thing this family stopped doing. Then put that one thing back this month.

The naming needs to be out loud and with somebody else, because in your head the list is a hundred long and unbearable. Out loud with your wife, or with whoever is in this with you, and pick one.

You are able to name it with somebody rather than carrying the list alone, and saying it out loud has never once made the total heavier than it already is. Isaiah 54:2 speaks to a household about its own dwelling, and the Spirit of God is with two people at a table deciding on one thing.

Then put it back, this month, with a date on it. And drive the stakes in at the same time: decide in advance how he gets out of it. Where the quiet place is. Who takes him. How long you actually stay.

That is the lengthened cord and the strengthened stake in one move. The thing goes back in and the anchoring goes in with it.

You are able to put something back with the exit already built, and planning the way out has never once been you expecting it to fail. It is written spare not, lengthen thy cords, and strengthen thy stakes, all in one breath, and the Holy Spirit is the one who is present when a household does both at once.

And go once. Not start a pattern, not commit to a monthly thing. Once, with a date, and see.
