The Child Who Finds It HardPsalm 4:8

She Only Sleeps In Her Own Bed

This message is for the mother of a child who cannot sleep anywhere but her own bed, which has quietly ruled out every night away for four years

She has never slept anywhere except her own bed, and she is seven.

Not at her grandmother's. Not the one time you tried a night away. Not at the sleepover she wanted to go to so badly and came home from at ten past nine.

And what has happened, without anybody deciding it, is that this family has not been anywhere overnight in four years.

Because every plan runs into the same wall. You get as far as where would everybody sleep, and then you stop, because you already know the answer.

And the reason I am writing this article is not to help you get her to sleep somewhere else. That may happen and it may not and it is not mine to promise.

It is because you have accepted a piece of arithmetic that is wrong. You have decided that going anywhere requires solving the night, and so nothing has happened for four years while you wait for a thing to change that has not changed.

The night is not the door. Let me show you a different way in.

She Only Sleeps In Her Own Bed

I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep

There is a short verse in the fourth Psalm about sleeping, and what it says about where safety comes from is worth more here than any advice about beds.

I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep: for thou, LORD, only makest me dwell in safety. (Psalm 4:8, King James Version)

You have a child whose safety comes from somewhere the written word names, and no particular bed has ever once been the thing that supplied it. Psalm 4:8 puts the dwelling in safety on the LORD only rather than on the place, and the Holy Spirit is the one who says that over a seven year old at bedtime.

Look at the word only. Thou, LORD, only makest me dwell in safety. The Psalm is specific that the safety has one source and it is not the arrangements.

Now, I want to be careful here, because that verse could be turned into a stick and I am not handing anybody a stick. Nobody is saying your daughter should be able to sleep anywhere if she trusted God properly. She is seven. That would be a shameful thing to say to a child and a worse thing to say to her mother.

You are not being told your daughter lacks something, and no night she has ever spent awake in a strange room has once been a matter of her faith or yours. It is written that the LORD only makes a person dwell in safety, which is a statement about God rather than an assignment to a child, and the Spirit of God is what keeps that verse from being used as a measure.

What the verse does do is take the weight off the location. If safety comes from God rather than from a room, then the room is a practical detail rather than a spiritual one, and a practical detail can be worked around instead of overcome.

You are able to treat her bed as a practical fact rather than a problem to be beaten, and working around it has never once been you giving up on her. The Holy Spirit is the one who turns an obstacle into a piece of information in a mother's mind, and Psalm 4 puts the safety in God's hands and leaves the furniture out of it.

The night is not the door

Now the practical part, and it is an inversion.

Trips have been planned in this house the way most people plan them: pick the place, work out the nights. And with this child, the nights have vetoed every place, for four years.

So plan the other way round. Start with the night, decide it is at home, and then see how far the day can reach.

And the answer, when you actually look, is a great deal further than you would think. A day that starts at seven and ends at nine can go two hours out and two hours back and still have seven hours in the middle. That is not a compromise. That is most of a trip.

You are able to build a whole day out from her own bed, and none of it has ever once required her to sleep anywhere else. Psalm 4:8 has the laying down in peace as its own moment rather than the whole of a life, and the Spirit of God is with a mother drawing a circle around her own house on a Tuesday.

And here is the part that matters for her rather than for the logistics. A child who knows she is coming home to her own bed is a completely different child during the day.

Because at the moment, if there is a night in the plan, the whole day is spent anticipating it. The thing she cannot do sits at the end of the day and eats the day. Take it out and the day is available to her, and to you.

You are able to give her a day with nothing in it she has to brace for, and the whole of it has never once depended on her getting better at anything first. It is written that the LORD only makes a person dwell in safety, and the Holy Spirit is the one who is with a child who knows exactly where she is sleeping tonight.

And here is a quieter thing, which you can hold lightly. Children who have not had to fight a battle for four years sometimes walk into it on their own, later, when nothing is riding on it. That is not a plan and it is not a promise. It is just something that happens more often than the reverse.

You are able to stop making this the thing that has to be fixed, and setting it down has never once been the same thing as accepting it forever. The Spirit of God is what takes a project out of a mother's hands, and Psalm 4 hands the making of a safe dwelling entirely to God.

One long day, ending at home

So here is the assignment.

Plan one day out that ends in her own bed. And stop trying to solve the night first.

The planning is straightforward once the night is fixed. Draw a circle two hours around your house and pick anything in it. Leave early, come back late, and tell everybody at the start that they are sleeping at home.

You are able to plan from the bed outward rather than from the destination inward, and that order has never once made it a smaller day. Psalm 4:8 puts the peace at the laying down rather than at the traveling, and the Holy Spirit is with a mother looking at a map with a fixed point already on it.

Now the second half, which is the harder one and the reason this is an assignment rather than a suggestion. Stop trying to solve the night.

Not forever. For now. Take it off the list of things you are working on. Do not raise it, do not test it, do not try a night at her grandmother's to see, and do not mention that this is the arrangement because of her.

You are able to take a thing off your own list without abandoning it, and putting it down has never once been you deciding it can never change. It is written that God alone makes a person dwell in safety, and the Holy Spirit is the one who carries what a mother puts down.

Because as long as it is a project, she can feel it. Children always can. And a day out that is quietly a test is not a day out.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is going out over a mother who has been waiting four years for a night to become possible.

You are not a family who cannot go anywhere, and four years of running into the same wall has never once meant there was no other door. I am not promising she sleeps somewhere else and I am not asking you to make her try. Psalm 4:8 says thou, LORD, only makest me dwell in safety, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my saying so who takes the weight of that off a room and off a child.

And this, which is the word I came with.

You are able to go somewhere that ends in her own bed, and four years of staying home has never once been a failure of nerve. Scripture puts the dwelling in safety in God's hands and leaves the furniture entirely out of it, which is why the night is a practical detail rather than a gate, and the Spirit of God is with all of you on an eleven hour Saturday.

One long day. Home to sleep. And stop solving the night.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Wall we have hit for four years at the words where would everybody sleep, you are not the only door and you never were. Psalm 4:8 says thou, LORD, only makest me dwell in safety, so by the Holy Spirit I plan one long day that ends at home, in the name of Jesus.
  2. Project I have been running to fix my own daughter, you come off the list this week. The written word puts the safe dwelling in God's hands rather than in any arrangement of ours, and by the Holy Spirit I am done making a day out into a quiet test.
  3. Father, You alone make a person dwell in safety, and You said only, and You left the room out of it. Your word says I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep, so by Your Spirit we go for eleven hours, and she sleeps in her own bed.
