The One Who Plans It AllLuke 15:29

I Resented Them For Enjoying It

This message is for the mother who made a good day happen and then could not forgive her family for having a good day in it, and is ashamed of that and cannot say it

You made the whole day happen and then you could not stand watching them enjoy it.

That is the sentence, and I doubt you have ever said it, and I am going to spend this article on it because it is more common than almost anything else on this site and nobody ever admits to it.

Here is the shape of the afternoon. You planned it. You bought it, packed it, drove it and arranged it. It went well, which is rare, and everybody had a genuinely good time.

And at about three in the afternoon you were standing slightly apart from them, watching your own family being happy in a thing you had built, and what was in you was not gladness.

It was something closer to a grievance. And underneath the grievance, something worse: the wish that somebody would notice, followed immediately by the certainty that wanting to be noticed makes the whole thing worthless.

And then you buried it, and were pleasant, and have been ashamed of it since.

There is a man in Luke who said your sentence out loud, and the way his father answered him is the reason this article exists.

I Resented Them For Enjoying It

Thou never gavest me a kid

There is a speech at the end of the story of the prodigal son that almost nobody preaches, and it is the most honest thing anybody says in that chapter.

And he answering said to his father, Lo, these many years do I serve thee, neither transgressed I at any time thy commandment: and yet thou never gavest me a kid, that I might make merry with my friends. (Luke 15:29, King James Version)

You have somebody in the written word who said your exact sentence out loud to his own father, and no version of that scene has ever once had him thrown out for saying it. Luke 15:29 has him name the years and the grievance plainly rather than manage it in a field, and the Holy Spirit is the one who shows a woman that the saying is not the sin.

Read what he actually says. These many years do I serve thee. He counts the years out loud. Then: thou never gavest me a kid. He names what he did not get.

It is not gracious. It is not dressed up. It is a man in a field telling his father that he has done everything right and got nothing for it.

You are able to say the ungracious version to God, and saying it has never once been the thing that separated anybody from anything. It is written that he said these many years do I serve thee and yet thou never gavest me, which is recorded without any softening, and the Spirit of God is what carries a sentence like that upward rather than burying it.

And now look at what the father does with it, because this is the part that matters.

He goes out to him. He does not send for him. And the first word out of his mouth is not a correction. It is son. And then he says: all that I have is thine.

You are answered rather than corrected, and no version of that sentence out of your mouth has once made you the villain in your own family. The Holy Spirit is the one who comes out to somebody standing apart from a celebration, and Luke 15 has the father leaving the party to go and stand in a field with the one who could not come in.

That is where you were at three in the afternoon. Standing slightly apart from a celebration you had paid for. And the movement in that story is toward the person outside, which is worth having, because you have spent weeks assuming you were the problem in it.

The grievance is not ingratitude

Now the practical part, and it is about what that feeling actually was, because it has been misfiled.

It has been filed as ingratitude, or as begrudging your own children a good time, and it is neither, and I can show you why.

If you begrudged them, you would not have built it. Nobody plans, buys, packs and drives a day for people they resent. The building is the evidence, and it points the other way.

You are not a woman who begrudges her family anything, and the whole of that afternoon has ever only been you giving them something. The Spirit of God is what reads a woman's own actions back to her, and it is written that the elder son had served for years, which the father never once disputed.

So what was it? Almost certainly this. Invisible work produces a specific ache, and the ache has nothing to do with the people benefiting from it. It is the ache of having done something real that has left no trace anywhere except in your own body.

And it arrives at the exact moment the work succeeds, which is the cruelest part of its timing, because a day that goes badly gets noticed and a day that goes well is invisible by definition.

You are able to feel that ache without it meaning anything about your love for them, and the timing of it has never once been evidence of a hard heart. It is written that the father said all that I have is thine to a man who had just complained, and the Holy Spirit is the one who explains a feeling to a woman rather than prosecuting it.

And one more thing, which is the reason the burying is the actual problem. A grievance that has been said out loud once, to God, in its real words, loses most of its power. A grievance that is buried and treated as shameful becomes something you carry into the next day out, and it makes the next one worse.

Say it in the actual words

So here is the assignment.

Say the resentful sentence out loud to God, in the actual words. Once.

Not a cleaned up version. Not, Lord, help me with my attitude. The elder brother's version. Something like: I did the whole of that, and nobody noticed, and I watched them enjoy it and I could not stand it, and I want somebody to say thank you.

You are able to say the true version rather than the acceptable one, and saying it has never once been you accusing anybody in your family. Luke 15:29 records the ungracious speech word for word without softening it, and the Spirit of God is with a woman saying something rough out loud in a kitchen on her own.

Out loud, and once. Not as a habit, and not on a list of things to work on. Say it, and then stop and be quiet for a minute.

And here is what to expect, and it is why this works. The sentence gets smaller when it is said. In your head it has the weight of a character flaw. Out loud it sounds like a tired woman who did a lot of work, which is what it is.

You are able to hear it as tiredness rather than as a flaw, and no version of it has ever once been the thing you have been afraid it was. It is written that the father came out and called him son, and the Holy Spirit is the one who is in the room in the minute after a woman says the real thing.

And then, if you can, one more sentence. Not out loud to anybody. Just: all that I have is thine, said back to you rather than by you. That is what was said to the man who had just made that complaint, and it was said before he apologized, because he never did.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is going out over a woman standing apart from her own family at three in the afternoon.

You are not a woman who begrudges her children a good time, and the entire afternoon has ever only been you building something for them at your own cost. I am not telling you the feeling was fine and I am not asking anybody to thank you. Luke 15:29 says thou never gavest me a kid, that I might make merry with my friends, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my saying so who carries a rough sentence upward instead of burying it.

And this, which is the word I came with.

You are able to say the resentment out loud to God and stay in the room, and one afternoon of it has never once made you a woman who begrudges her own family. Scripture records the ungracious speech word for word and has the father come out to the man who made it, which is why the saying is safe, and the Spirit of God is in that doorway with you.

The actual words. Out loud. Once. Then be quiet.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Feeling I have been carrying since three o'clock that afternoon, you are said out loud this week and you are not evidence about me. Luke 15:29 says thou never gavest me a kid, so by the Holy Spirit I say the real words out loud once, in the name of Jesus.
  2. Shame that filed a tiredness as a hard heart, you had it wrong. The written word records the ungracious speech in full and has the father come out to the man who said it, and by the Holy Spirit I am done burying a thing about my own family that gets smaller the moment it is spoken.
  3. Father, You had a father leave his own party and go out into a field, and the first word He said was son, and He said all that I have is thine before anybody apologized. Your word says all that I have is thine, so by Your Spirit I say the rough sentence, and I stay in the room.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
