I Organize Every Trip And Never Get One

You have been on nine trips in six years and you have not had one of them.

Somebody else in this family could tell you what they did on those trips. What they saw, what the food was like, the funny thing on the third day.

Your account is different. You could tell me what was in the bag, who was unwell, what the arrangements were, and where everybody was at any given hour. You were present at all nine and you attended none of them.

And here is the thing about that which makes it almost impossible to say out loud: nobody did this to you.

Nobody told you to carry it. You are simply the person in this house who notices things before they become problems, and that is a genuine capacity and it has real value and the price of it is that you are on duty for the whole of every day away.

So the sentence you would need to say sounds, to your own ear, like a complaint about people you love. And you will not say it. And so it has not been said in six years.

I am not going to ask you to say it either. This article does not fix anything by getting anybody else to change. It is about twenty minutes, and it is entirely inside your own hands.

Cumbered about much serving

There is a scene in Luke that gets preached at busy women, usually badly, and I want to read it with you in a different way.

But Martha was cumbered about much serving, and came to him, and said, Lord, dost thou not care that my sister hath left me to serve alone? bid her therefore that she help me. (Luke 10:40, King James Version)

You have somebody in the written word who was carrying the whole of a day and who said so out loud, and no version of that scene has ever once begun with her being wrong to speak. Luke 10:40 has her come to Him and say it plainly rather than manage it silently, and the Holy Spirit is the one who shows a woman that the speaking was the first right thing in that room.

Look at the word cumbered. It means loaded, encumbered, weighed down. It is a description of a physical state, and it is offered without criticism attached.

And notice what she does with it. She does not sigh in a doorway. She does not do the thing louder so somebody notices. She goes to Him and she says the actual sentence.

You are able to say the actual sentence to God rather than perform it in a doorway, and saying it has never once been you complaining about anybody in your house. It is written that she came to him and said it, which is the only thing in that scene anybody actually did about it, and the Spirit of God is what turns a silent load into a said one.

Now, the answer she gets is not the one she asked for, and this is where the passage usually gets used against women like you, so let me be careful.

She asked Him to send her sister to help. He does not. He addresses her instead, and He speaks about one thing being needful.

And what I want you to notice is the direction of it. He did not fix the room. He gave something to her, directly, that did not depend on anybody else changing.

You are able to receive something that does not depend on anybody else changing, and no part of that has ever once required your household to be different first. The Holy Spirit is the one who gives a thing directly to the person carrying, and Luke 10 has Him answering Martha rather than reorganizing the kitchen.

That is the whole design of this article. Nothing here asks your family to notice. Nothing here is a hint to be left where somebody will find it.

Twenty minutes, and nobody has to agree

Now the practical part, and it is deliberately small, and the smallness is the point.

Nothing has changed in six years because every solution imagined so far requires somebody else to act. Somebody would have to take over the bag. Somebody would have to notice. And there is no way of arranging that without it becoming a conversation about how much you do.

So here is a version that needs nobody.

Twenty minutes, on the next trip, in which you are responsible for nothing. Not the whole afternoon. Not a share of the load. Twenty minutes.

You are able to take twenty minutes without anybody's permission, and it has never once required a single other person in this family to agree to it. The Spirit of God is what shows a woman a door she can open on her own, and it is written that Christ gave something to Martha rather than reassigning the work.

And here is how to make it real, because a vague intention to relax will not survive contact with a Tuesday.

Pick the time in advance, before you leave. A specific window: after lunch on the second day, from two until twenty past. Write it down if that helps.

Then, at two o'clock, sit down somewhere in sight of everybody and be off duty. Not somewhere hidden, because hidden requires explanation. In sight, with a cup of something, doing nothing.

You are able to be visibly doing nothing for twenty minutes, and no minute of it has ever once needed to be earned first. It is written that she was cumbered about much serving and that He did not tell her to carry it better, and the Holy Spirit is the one who is present with a woman sitting on a wall on purpose.

And then the part that makes it work, which will feel wrong: tell nobody it is happening.

Not as secrecy. Because the moment it is announced, it becomes a thing the household has to participate in, and then it is about how much one person does, and then that conversation needs managing, which is more work than the twenty minutes was worth.

Twenty minutes, unannounced

So here is the assignment.

Take twenty minutes on the next trip with nothing at all assigned to you. And tell nobody it is happening.

Choose the window before you leave. Sit in sight. Do nothing. And here is the rule that carries the whole thing: if something goes slightly wrong during those twenty minutes, let it.

You are able to let a small thing go wrong for twenty minutes, and letting it has never once been you failing anybody in this family. Luke 10:40 has the one who was serving being answered rather than corrected, and the Spirit of God is with a woman watching something across the grass and not getting up.

Somebody will be too hot. Somebody will lose something. Almost certainly, one of the things you would normally have prevented will happen, and somebody else will deal with it, roughly, and the day will continue.

That is the actual content of the twenty minutes. Not rest. The discovery that the day does not fall over when you are not holding it.

You are able to find out what happens when you are not holding it, and finding out has never once been the same thing as abandoning your post. The Holy Spirit is the one who keeps a household while a woman sits down, and it is written that only one thing was needful, said to the person who was carrying everything.

And do not review it afterward. Do not ask anybody how it went, and do not tell anybody what you did.
