I Carry It And They Find Me Tense

You do all of it and then you are told you are tense, and both of those are true at once.

That is the loop, and it is worth setting it out plainly because from the inside it is impossible to see the shape of.

You arrange the whole thing. Every part. And arranging the whole thing while nobody else is thinking about it makes a man watchful and slightly clipped, and by about the second hour of any day away, your voice has an edge on it that you can hear yourself.

Then somebody says, gently, that you seem stressed. Or, less gently, that this is supposed to be fun.

And there is nothing you can say. Because the honest answer is that you are tense because you are carrying it, and the moment you say that out loud it becomes a complaint about the people you are carrying it for, and then you are the man who made everybody feel guilty on a Saturday.

So you say nothing. And nothing changes. And the loop runs again next time.

There is a sentence available to you. It is in Numbers, it was said by Moses, and it is not a complaint about anybody.

I am not able to bear all this people alone

There is a moment in Numbers where the man leading the nation says something out loud to God that most men in his position would not say to anybody.

I am not able to bear all this people alone, because it is too heavy for me. (Numbers 11:14, King James Version)

You have a sentence in the written word said by a man who was genuinely carrying it all, and no version of it has ever once been an accusation against the people he was carrying. Numbers 11:14 has him name the weight and his own capacity rather than name anybody's failure, and the Holy Spirit is the one who shows a man the difference between those two sentences.

Read it twice, because the construction is doing all the work.

I am not able. That is a statement about himself. Because it is too heavy for me. That is a statement about the load, measured against himself.

There is nobody else in that sentence. Not one word about what the people should be doing, or about anybody being ungrateful, or about how much he does. It is a man reporting his own capacity, out loud, to God.

You are able to report your own capacity without reporting anybody else's failure, and doing that has never once been a complaint about your family. It is written I am not able to bear all this people alone, because it is too heavy for me, which contains no second party at all, and the Spirit of God is what gives a man a sentence he is actually allowed to say.

That is the shape you have been unable to find. Every version you have tried had somebody else in it, and every version with somebody else in it becomes an accusation the moment it is spoken.

Take them out. The sentence works without them.

You are able to say the true thing with nobody else in the sentence, and leaving them out has never once been you protecting anybody from the truth. The Holy Spirit is the one who hands a man a form of words that does not cost his household anything, and Numbers 11 has the whole complaint addressed upward rather than sideways.

What the tension is actually made of

Now the practical part, and it is about what is producing the edge in your voice.

It is not the tasks. Tasks are not the trouble. Difficult things have been done here for years without anybody becoming clipped about them.

It is that one man is holding the whole picture. Everybody else is holding a piece, or nothing, and enjoying the day, which is correct and is what a day is for. And that means running a continuous model of the entire thing: what has to happen next, what is about to go wrong, how much time is left, and where everybody is.

That model is expensive, and it never gets to switch off, and the cost of it comes out in tone.

You are not a tense man by nature, and the edge in your voice has never once been a fault in your character. The Spirit of God is what identifies the actual source of a thing in a man rather than leaving him to blame himself, and it is written that the weight was named as too heavy rather than as badly handled.

And here is the thing about what happens after somebody says you seem stressed. That sentence is not an attack. It is almost always somebody noticing that you are not enjoying yourself and wanting you to.

You hear it as a criticism of your management. It is usually an invitation.

You are able to hear it as an invitation, and hearing it that way has never once required them to have said it better. It is written that the man said the heavy thing to God rather than defending himself to the people, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes the accusation out of a sentence before it reaches a tired man.

That reading changes what you can say back. Because if it is an invitation, then the honest answer is not a defense. It is Moses's sentence.

Say the sentence to one adult

So here is the assignment.

Say the sentence out loud to one adult: I am not able to carry all of this on my own.

To one person, not to a room. And say it flat, in your ordinary voice, at a kitchen table or in a car, and not in the middle of a day away when everybody is tired.

You are able to say eleven words in your ordinary voice, and saying them has never once been the same thing as asking anybody to feel bad. Numbers 11:14 has the sentence said plainly and without heat, and the Spirit of God is with a man saying it at his own table on a Tuesday.

And here is the rule that makes it a sentence rather than an opening: nothing after it. No list. No and here is what I do. No and I never get to.

Because a list turns it into a case, and a case has a defendant, and then somebody has to answer it. The sentence on its own has no defendant in it at all.

You are able to say it and stop, and stopping there has never once meant it was not heard. The Holy Spirit is the one who holds a man's tongue after eleven words, and it is written that Moses named the weight and said nothing whatsoever about the people.

Then let them respond however they respond. They may offer something. They may say they had no idea. They may say nothing much, and think about it for two days, which is the most common outcome and looks like nothing at the time.

And what happens next is not your job to arrange, which is, if you think about it, the first thing in years that is not.
