There Will Not Be Another One

The flatness in your house is not a mood, and that is what makes it different from every other article about coming home.

For most families the flat week afterward is a feeling and it passes. Somebody says next time and the sentence has something behind it, and everybody adjusts and gets on with the term.

In your house next time is not available. You know the arithmetic exactly, because you did it to get this one, and there is no version of the next two years that contains another.

And your children know. Not the numbers, but they know. Children of a single parent work out the shape of the household economy at about six, and they have never once said so.

So the flatness in your house is not a mood, it is accurate, and everybody in it is carrying an accurate thing that nobody is saying.

That is what I want to work on. Not the money, which I cannot change, and not the feeling. The silence.

The lines are fallen unto me in pleasant places

There is a line in the sixteenth Psalm about a portion and a boundary, and the vocabulary in it comes from land rather than from feelings.

The lines are fallen unto me in pleasant places; yea, I have a goodly heritage. (Psalm 16:6, King James Version)

You have a verse in the written word about a measured portion rather than an unlimited one, and no boundary on what a household can afford has ever once put it outside that sentence. Psalm 16:6 talks about lines falling, which is a survey of land with edges on it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that specific to a woman who knows the exact arithmetic.

The lines are the measuring cords. It is a picture of somebody's portion being marked out, with a limit, because every portion has a limit and that is what makes it a portion rather than a wish.

And the man saying it is not saying he got everything. He is saying that what was marked out for him fell in pleasant places.

You are able to say something true about what is inside the lines, and the existence of the lines has never once made what is inside them smaller. It is written that the lines are fallen unto me in pleasant places, which is a statement about a bounded portion, and the Spirit of God is what lets a woman look at what is inside her own boundary rather than at the boundary.

And then the second half. I have a goodly heritage.

Heritage is a word about what gets passed on. It is not about what a person enjoys, it is about what they hand down, which is exactly the right word for what happened on that trip.

You have handed them something that is theirs to keep, and no absence of a second trip has once been able to take back the first. The Holy Spirit is the one who makes a completed week into a heritage rather than an episode, and Psalm 16 puts the goodly thing in the category of what gets passed on.

The silence costs more than the fact

Now the practical part, and it is about what your children are actually carrying.

They know there is no next one. And nobody has said it. So each of them is holding a fact they worked out on their own, privately, without being told, and without knowing whether they are allowed to know it.

That is a heavier arrangement than the fact itself. A known fact is a thing a household lives with. A suspected fact that nobody confirms is a thing a child manages alone, and children are bad at managing things alone and do it constantly.

You are able to say the thing they have already worked out, and telling them has never once been the same thing as taking something from them. The Spirit of God is what shows a mother the difference between a fact and a silence around it, and it is written that the lines are marked out plainly rather than left uncertain.

And here is the second cost, which is the one that will decide you. As long as nobody says it, every conversation about the trip has a shadow on it. Somebody starts to mention the week and then does not, because mentioning it leads toward the question nobody is asking.

So the week itself is becoming unmentionable, which means the thing you saved a year for is being quietly withdrawn from your household by a silence.

You are able to give this family the week back by naming what is not coming, and no honest sentence has once been able to take a good week away. It is written that the portion has edges and that what is inside it is good, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes an honest boundary the thing that protects what is inside it.

And I am not going to tell you to promise anything or hint at anything. Do not say maybe next year unless there is a next year. Your children have a very accurate instrument for that sentence and using it costs you more than the truth does.

Say it plainly, then name one thing you did

So here is the assignment, and it is two sentences in a specific order.

Tell them plainly there is not another one coming. Then tell them one thing you all did.

The first sentence, and say it as a fact rather than as bad news: there is not going to be another trip like that for a while, and that is just how it is at the moment.

You are able to say a hard fact in an ordinary voice, and saying it plainly has never once made it heavier for them to carry. Psalm 16:6 names the lines without apologizing for them, and the Spirit of God is with a woman saying something honest to her own children on a road.

No apology after it. No explanation of the money. They do not need the numbers and cannot do anything with them, and an explanation turns a fact into a burden.

Then, right away, the second sentence. Tell them one thing you all did.

Something specific from the week, with a person and a moment in it: do you remember when the three of us could not stop laughing about the thing at the door.

You are able to put the week in front of them in the same breath as the fact, and doing both at once has never once been you softening anything. It is written that the lines fell in pleasant places and that the heritage is goodly, both in one verse, and the Holy Spirit is the one who is present when a mother says the true hard thing and the true good thing together.

Because the order and the closeness are the whole of it. The fact on its own is a door closing. The fact and the memory together is a boundary drawn around something that is genuinely theirs.

And then let it be talked about. What you will find, and this is the reason for all of it, is that the week becomes mentionable again inside about a day.
