Coming Home AgainHebrews 13:5

The House Was Very Quiet After

This message is for the grandfather who came home from a week among all of them to a house with nobody in it, and cannot tell his children how loud that quiet was

You put the key in the door on Sunday evening and the house was very quiet, and you have not mentioned it to anybody.

There had been eleven people for six days. There was somebody in every room, and noise from about six in the morning, and four separate conversations happening at once in a kitchen, and somebody asking you something every few minutes.

And then you came home, and put a bag down in a hall, and stood there.

And here is what you did with that. You made something to eat, and you put the television on earlier than you would normally, and you went to bed at about half nine, and you were fine.

You were fine. I am not going to pretend you were not, because you are a capable man who has lived on his own for a while now and knows how to run a Sunday evening.

But it was very quiet. And that is a true thing that happened to you, and there is not one person in your family who knows it.

That is the whole subject of this article, and there is a verse in Hebrews with a promise in it that is worth having first.

The House Was Very Quiet After

I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee

There is a promise at the end of Hebrews attached to an instruction about contentment, and the pairing is the reason it belongs here.

Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee. (Hebrews 13:5, King James Version)

You have a promise in the written word about not being left, and no quiet house on any Sunday evening has ever once been evidence against it. Hebrews 13:5 gives I will never leave thee as the reason for the contentment rather than as a consolation for the lonely, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that specific to a man standing in a hall with a bag.

Look at the logic of it. Be content with such things as ye have, for he hath said, I will never leave thee.

The contentment is not based on the things. It is based on a sentence somebody said. And the sentence is about presence rather than about provision.

You are not alone in that house, and no amount of the rooms being empty has once been able to touch what was said. It is written be content with such things as ye have, for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee, which grounds the whole thing in company rather than in circumstances, and the Spirit of God is what makes that a fact in a kitchen at eight in the evening rather than a comfort in general.

And notice the double negative, because it is doing something. Never leave, nor forsake. Two ways of saying the same thing, which is how somebody speaks when they know the person listening will not accept it the first time.

You are being told it twice because once is not how a person receives a thing like this, and no lifetime of managing on your own has once made you slow. The Holy Spirit is the one who says a thing a second time to a capable man who heard it the first time and did not take it in, and Hebrews 13 puts both halves of the promise in one line.

Being fine is not the same as being unaffected

Now the practical part, and it is a distinction rather than a plan.

Being fine was genuinely true. There is no trouble here, and no loneliness in the way that word usually means, and if anybody asked you would say so and mean it.

And it was very quiet, and that affected you, and both of those are true at the same time.

You are able to be entirely fine and genuinely affected, and no version of being capable has once required you to be one and not the other. The Spirit of God is what lets a man hold two true things without picking one, and it is written that the contentment rests on a promise about presence rather than on nothing being felt.

And here is why it matters that somebody knows. Not because you need help, because you do not, and any offer of help would be slightly beside the point and you would decline it.

Because your family has a picture of that Sunday, and in their picture you went home and had a nice quiet evening after a busy week. And that picture is not wrong exactly, and it is missing the whole thing.

You are able to correct a picture without asking for anything, and telling somebody has never once been the same thing as needing something. It is written that the promise was given twice over, and the Holy Spirit is the one who moves a man from managing a thing alone to having said it once.

And there is a second reason, which is about them rather than about you. Your children are going to be seventy at some point. And the thing they will need most, at about sixty five, is to have seen an older man they respect say an ordinary true thing about being on his own without it being a complaint or a crisis.

You are the only person who can teach them that, and it takes about eleven words.

You are able to show them how a man does this, and doing it has never once required the thing to be a hardship. The Holy Spirit is the one who is present when an older man says something plain and unsentimental to his own child, and Hebrews 13:5 puts a promise about presence next to an instruction about being content.

Tell one of them, and do not soften it

So here is the assignment.

Tell one of them that the house was quiet when you got back. And do not soften it.

One person, on the phone or in a doorway, at some point in an ordinary conversation about something else. Say it plainly: it was very quiet here when I got back on the Sunday.

You are able to say a plain true sentence about your own evening, and saying it has never once been you asking for anything. Hebrews 13:5 has the promise stated flatly rather than dressed up, and the Spirit of God is with a man saying eleven words on a telephone.

Now the hard half, which is the softening, because you will do it automatically and it will cancel the sentence.

Do not add but I was fine. Do not add which was nice after all that noise. Do not laugh at the end of it. Every one of those is you taking the sentence back before anybody has responded to it, and you have been doing that for about fifty years.

You are able to say it and leave it unsoftened, and leaving it there has never once made you a man who complains. It is written I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee, said twice and softened neither time, and the Holy Spirit is the one who holds an old man's tongue off the reassurance he has always added.

Then let them say whatever they say. They may be quiet. Somebody may say something clumsy. One of them may ring you the following Sunday, which is the most likely outcome and which is worth the eleven words on its own.

And do not do it more than once. This is not a subject to have. It is one sentence, said one time, so that the picture in your family has the true thing in it.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is going out over a man who stood in his own hall on a Sunday evening.

You are not a lonely old man, and one quiet Sunday has ever only been a true thing that happened to somebody who was also entirely fine. I am not telling you that you need help and I am not asking you to make a subject of it. Hebrews 13:5 says he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my saying so who was in that hall when the bag went down.

And this, which is the word I came with.

You are able to say the quiet was loud, and a lifetime of not making a fuss has never once meant nobody wanted to know. Scripture states the promise twice and softens it neither time, which is why the sentence goes unsoftened, and the Spirit of God is at your table this evening.

One sentence. One person. And nothing after it.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Habit of taking a true sentence back before anybody can answer it, you end on one phone call this month. Hebrews 13:5 says I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee, so by the Holy Spirit I say the plain thing and I do not soften it, in the name of Jesus.
  2. Version of that Sunday my family carries in which I had a nice quiet evening, you were not wrong and you were missing the whole of it. The written word says the promise twice and softens it neither time, and by the Holy Spirit I am done being the only person who knows what that hall was like.
  3. Father, You said I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee, and You said it twice because once is not how a man receives a thing like that. Your word says he hath said, so by Your Spirit I say eleven words to one of them, and I add nothing after them.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
