The Memory Was A Flat Tire

The day you think of as the day it went wrong is the day they think of as the good one, and one of you is wrong about it.

Here is your version. Forty minutes into a two hour drive, on the way to something you had arranged and paid for, a tire went. You spent about an hour on a verge. You got there late, tired, and with less of the day left than you wanted, and the thing you had actually planned got compressed into about ninety minutes.

Here is their version, which you have now heard three times. Do you remember when we got the flat tire.

That is the whole story to them. They do not go on to mention where you were going. Your daughter told somebody about it last month and did not include the destination.

And you have been slightly unsettled by that, because it is not modesty on their part and it is not them being kind about a bad day. They genuinely do not have the same day filed.

Let me tell you which of you is right, because there is an answer, and there is a man in Genesis who woke up and said exactly the sentence you need.

Surely the LORD is in this place, and I knew it not

There is a moment in Genesis where a man wakes up in a place he stopped at only because it got dark, and what he says is one of the most useful sentences in the Bible.

And Jacob awaked out of his sleep, and he said, Surely the LORD is in this place; and I knew it not. (Genesis 28:16, King James Version)

You have a sentence in the written word for exactly this discovery, and no roadside hour has ever once been outside the kind of place it describes. Genesis 28:16 has a man conclude that God was there after the fact rather than at the time, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that available to a man reconsidering an hour on a verge.

Read where he was. He was not at a destination. He had stopped because the sun went down, in a place with no name, and used a stone for a pillow. That is a delay, not an arrival.

And the account of what happened there is one of the largest things in Genesis. A ladder, a promise, and a whole covenant restated.

You are able to accept that the significant thing happened at the stopping place, and no arrival has ever once been where the important part had to be. It is written that he stopped because the sun was set and that the LORD was in that place, which puts the encounter at a delay rather than at a destination, and the Spirit of God is what makes a man reconsider his own account of an afternoon.

And then the second half of what he says, which is the part with your name on it. And I knew it not.

He did not notice at the time. That is stated plainly and without embarrassment. The man was present at the most important night of his life and did not know until he woke up.

You are able to have been present at something and not have known it, and missing it at the time has never once meant you were absent from it. The Holy Spirit is the one who makes a thing knowable afterward without shaming the man who did not see it, and Genesis 28 records the not knowing in the same breath as the discovery.

Their version is the accurate one

Now the practical part, and I am going to be direct about who is right, because I think you already suspect it.

They are.

Not because children are wiser. Because they assessed that hour on its own terms, and it got assessed here against a plan.

You are able to assess an hour on its own terms, and no plan of yours has ever once been the right measure to hold it against. Genesis 28:16 has a man name a roadside stop as the place God was in, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lets a father read his own afternoon a second time.

You had a thing arranged and paid for, and the hour on the verge was subtracted from it. So the hour registered in you as a loss, and it registered in them as an hour.

You are able to look at that hour on its own terms, and no plan of yours has ever once had the authority to make it a loss. The Spirit of God is what takes a comparison out of a memory, and it is written that the LORD was in a place a man had only stopped at because the light went.

And ask what was actually in it, because I would guess this is roughly right. All four of you outside, on a verge, with nothing to do and nowhere to be for an hour. You doing something with your hands while they watched and got in the way. Somebody sitting on the grass. Cars going past. A stretch of time with no plan in it, in an unremarkable place, with their father not hurrying.

There is no arrangement on earth you could have made that produces that.

You have given them something in that hour that could not be bought, and no version of the day as planned has once been able to contain it. It is written surely the LORD is in this place, said about a roadside stop, and the Holy Spirit is the one who is present in an unplanned hour on a verge.

And the thing you paid for was compressed into ninety minutes, and they have not mentioned it, and that is not ingratitude. It is that ninety minutes at an arranged thing is a normal experience and an hour on a verge with their father is not.

Tell it yourself, at a table

So here is the assignment, and it is going to feel strange because it means adopting their version over your own.

Tell the roadside story yourself, at a table, the way they tell it.

Not with your version included. Do not say we got a flat and it wrecked the day, or we lost an hour and then only had ninety minutes there. Tell it their way: we got a flat on the way, and we were on the grass for about an hour, and here is what happened.

You are able to tell it their way rather than yours, and doing that has never once been you pretending nothing was lost. Genesis 28:16 has the man name the place as the significant one rather than the journey it interrupted, and the Spirit of God is with a man telling a story at his own table in a version he did not arrive at first.

And tell it at a table with them there, which is the part that does the work. Because at the moment they have a story and you have a correction, and children can feel a correction hovering over a story even when nobody says it.

Telling it yourself, their way, ends that. It says: yes, that is what that was. And that is worth a great deal more to them than the ninety minutes they never mention.

You are able to ratify their version out loud, and doing that has never once cost you anything you actually needed. It is written and I knew it not, said by a man who then built an altar in that exact spot, and the Holy Spirit is the one who is present when a father agrees with his own children about what happened.

And keep one thing for yourself, which is the reframing. That hour was not the day going wrong. That hour was the day.
