The Day We Still Talk AboutProverbs 17:1

The Best Day Cost Nothing

This message is for the single mother whose family's best day cost nothing at all, who is embarrassed to say so because it sounds like she is making the best of things

The best day this family has had cost nothing, and you have never said so out loud, and the reason is not modesty.

The reason is that you know exactly how it would sound.

It would sound like a woman with no money explaining that the free things are the best things. And you have heard other people say that, and you have privately thought that it was something a person says when they have run out of other options.

So you will not say it about your own family, even though it is true, because you cannot bear to be the woman in that sentence.

That is what I want to deal with. Not the day, which was genuinely good and needs no defending. The sentence, and why you cannot say it, and what it is costing your children that you do not.

The Best Day Cost Nothing

Better is a dry morsel, and quietness therewith

There is a proverb about two houses that says something more precise than the version people quote, and the precision is what makes it usable.

Better is a dry morsel, and quietness therewith, than an house full of sacrifices with strife. (Proverbs 17:1, King James Version)

You have a comparison in the written word that runs in the direction you are afraid to say out loud, and no household has ever once been ranked in Scripture by what was on its table. Proverbs 17:1 calls the smaller meal with quietness better rather than adequate, and the Holy Spirit is the one who says that over a woman who will not say it about her own family.

Look at how honest it is about the meal. A dry morsel. Not a modest meal, not a simple one. Dry. The verse concedes the poverty of it in the plainest possible word and then makes its claim anyway.

That matters enormously for you, because the sentence you cannot say is a sentence that pretends. And this verse does not pretend at all.

You are able to say a true thing without dressing it up, and conceding what was thin has never once weakened the point. It is written better is a dry morsel, and quietness therewith, which names the thinness first, and the Spirit of God is what lets a woman be accurate and unashamed in the same sentence.

And notice the second half, because that is where the comparison actually sits. An house full of sacrifices with strife. Sacrifices, in that setting, means meat. A full table.

So the comparison is not poverty against wealth. It is quietness against strife, and the size of the meal is mentioned only to establish that it is not the deciding variable.

You are able to name what actually decided it, and no amount of the day having been free has once been what made it the best one. The Holy Spirit is the one who identifies the real ingredient in a household's best day, and Proverbs 17 puts the whole weight on quietness rather than on the morsel.

That is the sentence you can say. Not: our best day was free. Say: our best day was the one where nobody was fighting and nobody was in a hurry. Which is what actually happened, and which nobody can hear as making the best of things.

What the silence teaches them

Now the practical part, and it is about your children rather than about you.

They were there. They know it was the best day. My guess is one of them has said so.

And what they have never heard is their mother agree. So there is a day this family all knows was the best one, and the adult in the house has never confirmed it.

You are able to confirm what your children already know, and confirming it has never once been you telling them to be satisfied with less. The Spirit of God is what gets a woman to agree out loud with something true, and it is written that the better house is named plainly rather than left implied.

And here is what the silence teaches, and it is the thing worth acting on. A child who says that was the best day, and whose mother changes the subject or says something like it was lovely wasn't it, learns that the day was somehow not allowed to be the best one.

And then they learn the ranking. Which is the exact thing you have been trying to protect them from.

You are able to stop teaching them a ranking you do not believe in, and every silence about that day has ever only been you protecting them from something. It is written that the dry morsel with quietness is better, said out loud as a judgment, and the Holy Spirit is the one who gets a mother to make the same judgment about her own house.

So the silence is not neutral. It is doing the work you were afraid the sentence would do.

And one more thing, which is short. The woman in that sentence, the one you cannot bear to be, is somebody consoling herself. That is a different act entirely from making an accurate observation about one specific Tuesday, and only one of the two is embarrassing.

You are not the woman in that sentence, and no true observation about your own family has once made you into her. Proverbs 17:1 makes a plain judgment rather than a consolation, and the Holy Spirit is the one who separates an accurate sentence from a comforting one.

Say which day it was, and stop

So here is the assignment.

Say out loud to your children which day was the best one. And do not explain why.

Say it plainly, at a table or in a car, as a statement of fact rather than as an argument. That day at the water in August was the best day we have had.

You are able to say it as a fact rather than as a case, and stating it has never once required you to defend it. Proverbs 17:1 makes its judgment in one line with no argument attached, and the Spirit of God is with a woman saying an ordinary true sentence on a wall.

And then do not explain. This is the whole discipline, and it is the part you will want to breach.

Do not say and it did not even cost anything, because that is you getting in front of the objection. Do not say which shows you do not need money to have a good time, because that is the sentence you were afraid of and it will arrive in your own mouth if you let it.

You are able to leave the explanation out entirely, and leaving it out has never once been you hiding anything from your children. It is written that the proverb names the thin meal and the quietness and then stops, and the Holy Spirit is the one who holds a woman's tongue off the second half of a sentence.

Just the fact. That day was the best one. Then let somebody else speak.

And if one of them says something about money, you can answer it then, once, briefly. But do not answer it before it is asked, because answering it unasked is how a child learns there was something to answer.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is going out over a woman who cannot say a true thing about her own best day.

You are not a woman consoling herself, and every silence about that day has ever only been you refusing to teach your children a ranking. I am not telling you that free days are better and I am not asking you to be glad about the money. Proverbs 17:1 says better is a dry morsel, and quietness therewith, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my saying so who names the thinness plainly and then makes the judgment anyway.

And this, which is the word I came with.

You are able to say out loud which day was the best one, and its costing nothing has never once made it a thing to be embarrassed about. Scripture concedes the dry morsel first and puts the whole weight on the quietness, which is why the sentence is safe to say, and the Spirit of God is on that wall with the three of you.

One sentence. As a fact. Then let somebody else speak.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Sentence I cannot say because of how it would sound, you are said out loud this week as a plain fact. Proverbs 17:1 says better is a dry morsel, and quietness therewith, so by the Holy Spirit I tell my children which day was the best one, in the name of Jesus.
  2. Silence that has left my own children's best day unconfirmed, you were never protecting them and you taught them the ranking instead. The written word concedes the dryness and puts the weight on the quietness, and by the Holy Spirit I am done changing the subject when one of them says it.
  3. Father, You called the small meal with quietness better and You did not pretend the meal was large. Your word says than an house full of sacrifices with strife, so by Your Spirit I say the plain sentence, and I explain nothing, and I let somebody else speak next.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
