Going On Almost NothingProverbs 15:17

She Asked Why We Never Go Anywhere

This message is for the mother whose daughter asked her outright why they never go anywhere, who had no answer ready and has been carrying the question since

She asked you in the car and you did not have an answer.

Why do we never go anywhere.

Not sulking. Not accusing. She asked it the way children ask things, as a genuine question about how the world is arranged, and then she waited for you to answer it, and something in you went sideways.

So you said something. Probably something about money, or about it being expensive, or maybe you said we do go places, which you both knew was not what she was asking.

And then the conversation moved on, and you have been carrying the question ever since. Days now. It comes back at the sink and in the car and at about eleven at night.

Here is what I think is going on, and see whether this is close.

The question was not the problem. The problem is that you do not have an answer you can bear to give her, because every version of it you have tried in your head is either a lie, or a lecture about money that a nine year old should not have to receive, or an apology that would tell her she is right to feel deprived.

So let me help you build the sentence. Because there is one, and it is short, and it is true, and it does not do any of those three things.

She Asked Why We Never Go Anywhere

Better is a dinner of herbs

There is a proverb about two houses at dinner, and it is more surgical than the greeting card version of it.

Better is a dinner of herbs where love is, than a stalled ox and hatred therewith. (Proverbs 15:17, King James Version)

You have a comparison in the written word that runs the other way from the one in your head, and no household has ever once been ranked in Scripture by the size of what was on the table. Proverbs 15:17 sets the two houses side by side and calls the smaller dinner better rather than adequate, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes a mother hear that about her own kitchen instead of in general.

Now, I want to be careful, because this verse gets used to tell poor people that their situation is secretly preferable, and that is not what it says.

It is not comparing rich with poor. It is comparing two houses on a different axis entirely: one has love in it and one has hatred in it. The size of the meal is mentioned only to show that it is not the deciding variable.

And the verse does not say the herbs are nice. Herbs is a thin dinner. The verse concedes that plainly and then says it is not the thing that decides.

You are allowed to call a thin thing thin and still know which house you would rather a child grow up in, and holding both has never once been you making excuses. It is written that the smaller dinner is called better rather than called sufficient, which is why nothing here asks you to pretend the meal is large, and the Spirit of God is what keeps a mother truthful and unashamed in the same sentence.

That matters for your answer, because it means you do not have to choose between honesty and reassurance. The verse does both at once, in nine words.

You are able to be honest and reassuring in the same breath, and doing both has never once required you to soften the facts for her. The Holy Spirit is the one who puts a true short sentence in a parent's mouth in a moving car, and Proverbs 15 concedes the size of the dinner without conceding anything else.

What she is actually asking

Now the practical part, and it starts with getting the question right, because I think you answered a different one.

She asked why we never go anywhere. And you heard: why are we poor, and whose fault is that.

That is almost certainly not what she asked. A nine year old asking that question is usually asking one of two much simpler things. Either: is there a reason, or is it just that nobody has thought about it. Or: could we.

Neither of those is an accusation. Both of them have short answers.

You are answering a smaller question than the one you have been dreading, and no version of it has ever once been her holding you to account. The Spirit of God is what shrinks a question back to its real size in a parent's mind, and Proverbs 15:17 weighs a household by what is in it rather than by what it can afford.

And here is the thing about children and money, which took me a long time to learn. They can hold the fact. What they cannot hold is the feeling.

A child can be told, plainly, that trips cost more than this family has, and be completely fine. They file it with all the other facts about how their house works. What harms a child is not the fact. It is watching a parent be ashamed while they say it, because then the child learns that this is a shameful subject and that they have just walked into it.

You are able to say the fact without carrying shame while you say it, and speaking plainly has never once put anything on her that she cannot carry. It is written that a dinner of herbs where love is beats a full table with hatred at it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes the flinch out of a mother's voice.

So the sentence has three parts, and it is shorter than you think. The fact, with no apology. Then no lecture. Then one real thing that is going to happen.

One honest sentence and one real thing

So here is the assignment.

Answer that question in one honest sentence, and add one thing you could do this month.

Go back to her. Do not wait for the subject to come up again, because it will not. Find her, and start with this: I have been thinking about what you asked me. That part will matter to her more than the answer does.

Then the sentence. Something like: big trips cost more than we have right now, and that is the only reason, and it is nothing to do with you. Then stop. That is the whole fact.

You are giving her a fact and not a burden, and the plainness of it has never once been more than a nine year old can hold. Proverbs 15:17 names the thin dinner without embarrassment, and the Spirit of God is standing with a mother who says the true short thing and then closes her mouth.

Then, and this is the part that turns an answer into something she keeps: one real thing. Not someday. Not when we can. Something with a day attached that you are actually going to do this month, and it can be small enough to be free.

And here is why. What a child does with why do we never go anywhere is not build a case. She is checking whether this is permanent. One dated thing answers that better than any explanation.

You are able to answer the real question underneath hers, and one dated small thing has never once needed to be large to settle it. The Holy Spirit is the one who knows what a child is actually asking, and Proverbs 15 puts the weight of a household on what is in the room rather than on the size of the meal.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is going out over a mother carrying a question from a car.

You are not a mother who has nothing to say to her own child, and a week of turning it over has never once been evidence of what your daughter thinks about you. I am not asking you to explain your finances and I am not telling you to promise anything. Proverbs 15:17 says better is a dinner of herbs where love is, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my saying so who puts a true short answer in a parent's mouth.

And this, which is the word I came with.

You are able to answer her honestly, and telling a child the truth about money has never once been the same thing as telling her she is missing out. Scripture concedes the size of the dinner and then weighs the house on something else entirely, which is why the fact is safe to say, and the Spirit of God is with you when you go and find her.

One sentence. No lecture. Then one dated thing.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Question I have carried since the traffic light, you have an answer and it is short. Proverbs 15:17 says better is a dinner of herbs where love is, so by the Holy Spirit I go and find her and say one honest sentence, in the name of Jesus.
  2. Shame that stood behind every answer I tried, you were never the fact and you were never hers to carry. The written word concedes the thin dinner and weighs the house on love instead, and by the Holy Spirit I am done letting a subject be shameful in front of my own daughter.
  3. Father, You called the small meal better and You did not pretend it was large. Your word says better is a dinner of herbs where love is, so by Your Spirit I tell her the truth, and I name one real day this month, and I let her ask if she can bring a friend.
