I Shouted In A Parking Lot

You shouted, in a parking lot, in front of your family and about nine strangers.

And you have not been able to think about that day since without a physical sensation in your chest.

Here is what you actually remember, and I would guess the order is roughly this. Not the argument. Not what anybody had done. You remember your own voice, from slightly outside yourself, and you remember one face, and you remember a woman near the vehicle next to you looking away in the specific way people look away.

Everything else about that day has gone. That is what shame does to a memory. It burns off the context and keeps the four seconds.

And the strangers are the part that makes it unbearable, which is interesting, because they are the part that matters least. They were gone in a minute. They have no idea what any of it was about and they will never think about it again.

The people who matter are still in your house. And there is one sentence available to you, and it is nine words long, and you have not said it because you have been trying to write a paragraph.

In many things we offend all

There is a line in James about the mouth that I want to put in front of you, and the first clause of it is the reason.

For in many things we offend all. If any man offend not in word, the same is a perfect man, and able also to bridle the whole body. (James 3:2, King James Version)

You have a sentence in the written word that puts you inside the ordinary human case rather than outside it, and no parking lot has once made you an exception to it. James 3:2 says in many things we offend all before it says anything about anybody's failure in particular, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lets a man read that as company rather than as an excuse.

In many things we offend all. Not some of us. Not the weak ones. All, and in many things, and the man writing it includes himself in the sentence.

That is not permission and it is not a shrug. It is a plain statement about the general case, put at the front, before the specific standard is named.

You are not the only man who has done this, and no one hour of yours has once put you in a category of your own. It is written that in many things we offend all, said by the man who then goes on to write the hardest chapter in the Bible about the tongue, which is why the honesty comes before the standard, and the Spirit of God is what keeps a true thing from turning into a verdict.

And then look at what the second half does with the standard. If any man offend not in word, the same is a perfect man.

That is not a target being set for you. That is James saying: the man who never gets this wrong would be perfect, and you have met nobody like that.

You are not being measured against a man who never got it wrong, and no version of that man has ever once existed to be measured against. The Holy Spirit is the one who separates a real standard from an impossible one, and James 3 puts perfection where perfection belongs, which is out of reach.

Now, I am not going to tell you it did not matter. It did. Something happened to your son's face in that parking lot and you know exactly what it was.

But the repair for that is not shame, and shame has been the tool for three weeks, and it has produced nothing at all except silence.

You have a repair available that is not shame, and three weeks of carrying it has never once been the same thing as making it right. James 3:2 names the offending plainly and moves straight on rather than dwelling on it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who gets a man from the knowing to the saying.

Nine words, and no paragraph

Now the practical part, and it is short because the thing itself is short.

Nothing has been said yet because the whole account is still being composed.

The draft has to explain the pressure, acknowledge what he had done, express regret in a proportionate way, leave your standing intact, and avoid making him responsible for managing your feelings.

That paragraph does not exist. Nobody has ever written it. And while you have been working on it, three weeks have gone by in which the only thing in the room has been the silence.

You are able to say the short version instead of the complete one, and the short version has never once been less than what is owed. The Spirit of God is what gets a man to speak before he is eloquent, and it is written that in many things we offend all, which is the whole of the context anybody needs.

Here is the sentence. I shouted at you in that parking lot and I was wrong to. I am sorry.

That is it. Nineteen words if you count them, and about nine that do the work. And here is the rule that makes it hold: nothing after it.

No because. No I had been driving since six. No and you had been asked three times. Every one of those is true and every one of them turns the apology into an opening statement, and a child hearing an explanation attached to an apology learns that the apology was conditional.

You are able to say it and stop, and stopping there has never once been you giving up your authority in this house. It is written that the man who never offends in word would be a perfect man, which puts every father in the same room, and the Holy Spirit is the one who holds a man's tongue for the two seconds after he apologizes.

And the strangers. Let me deal with them, because they are taking up space that belongs to your son. You will never see them again, they did not know what was happening, and half of them have done the same thing. Put them down.

Say it to whoever heard you

So here is the assignment.

Say the plain sentence to whoever heard you. And do not add a reason to it.

Whoever was actually there. If it was one child, one child. If the others heard it, say it once with all of them in the room, which takes eleven seconds and costs nothing.

You are able to say it in front of everybody who heard it, and doing it plainly has never once cost a father anything he actually needed. James 3:2 puts every man inside the same sentence about offending, and the Spirit of God is with a man saying nineteen words in a kitchen.

Do it without a preamble. Do not announce that you want to talk to him. That builds a room he then has to sit in. Say it in the ordinary flow of an evening, at a sink or in a car, which is where things actually get said between men and their sons.

You are able to say the hardest thing sideways rather than at a table, and saying it in the car has never once made it smaller. The Holy Spirit is the one who chooses the moment better than a father can, and James 3 has the offending named as common before it says one word about mastery.

And then let him not respond. He may say nothing. He may say it is fine, which is not true and does not matter. Do not require anything back. The sentence was not a transaction.
