Going On Almost NothingMatthew 6:34

I Saved For A Year For Four Days

This message is for the mother who has saved for a whole year for four days away and is now frightened of wasting them, and is guarding them so tightly she cannot enjoy them

You have been putting money aside for eleven months and you leave in nine days.

Nobody knows how you did it. Small amounts, in ways nobody noticed, out of a budget that did not have room in it. It is four days. It is not far. And it took a year of small decisions that nobody thanked you for because nobody knew.

And instead of being excited, you are frightened.

Because here is the arithmetic running in you now. A year, for four days. Which means each of those days has to carry three months of saving on its back. And if one of them goes wrong, if it rains, if somebody is unwell, if there is a fight in the first hour, then a quarter of the year is gone.

So you have started to guard them. You have not booked anything, in case it is wrong. You have thought through what each day might look like. You have begun, quietly, to build a version in your head that all four days have to match.

And you know what that means, because you have been on trips before. It means you will spend all four days checking them against the picture rather than being in them.

I want to take the weight off those four days. Not by promising they go well, because I cannot, but by showing you where that weight came from, because it did not come from God.

I Saved For A Year For Four Days

Sufficient unto the day

There is a line at the end of the sixth chapter of Matthew that is usually applied to money and worry, and it applies just as exactly to four days in a row.

Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof. (Matthew 6:34, King James Version)

You have permission to hold one day at a time, and a year of saving has never once obliged you to carry all four of them at once. Matthew 6:34 breaks the future down into single days rather than into a stretch to be managed, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that arithmetic available to a woman nine days out.

Look at the shape of the instruction. It does not say do not think ahead. It says do not take thought for the morrow, which is a different verb: do not carry it, do not take it on, do not have tomorrow in your hands while you are standing in today.

And then the reason: the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Tomorrow will handle its own material. It does not need you to pre live it.

You are able to put three of those days down and pick up only the one you are standing in, and that has never once been you failing to plan. It is written that each day carries its own portion rather than the week's, which is why one day at a time is an instruction and not a coping strategy, and the Spirit of God is what makes a woman's hands open.

And then the last clause, which is the one people find bleak and which I think is the kindest sentence in the chapter. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.

Each day has enough trouble in it. That is stated as normal. Not as a failure of the day, and not as a sign that something has gone wrong with the trip.

You are not going to be given four days without trouble in them, and no day with trouble in it has ever once been a day that was wasted. The Holy Spirit is the one who tells a mother that in advance rather than after the second day has gone badly, and Matthew 6 says plainly that a day comes with its own portion of difficulty.

The picture is doing the damage

Now the practical part, because there is a specific mechanism here and it can be dismantled.

The problem is not the money and it is not the four days. It is the picture.

Somewhere in eleven months of saving, you built one. You had to. That picture is what kept you putting money aside when it would have been easier not to. It is what got you here, and I am not going to be sentimental about it: it did real work.

But a picture built over eleven months to sustain a sacrifice becomes, on the first morning, a standard. And nothing that actually happens ever matches a thing that was built to be worth a year.

You are able to arrive without a picture in your hands, and letting go of it has never once meant the year of saving was wasted. Matthew 6:34 puts the whole of tomorrow into tomorrow's keeping, and the Spirit of God is what unhooks a woman from an image she made to keep herself going.

And here is the thing about children, which will help you. They do not have the picture. They have no idea what this cost. They are not comparing anything to anything, and whatever happens is simply what happened.

That means you are the only person on this trip who can be disappointed. Which is worth knowing, because it means the disappointment is not in the events. It is in the comparison, and the comparison is yours, and it can be put down.

You are the only one holding a standard on this trip, and no member of this family has ever once been measuring it against the version in your head. It is written that sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lifts a private measurement out of a mother's chest before she leaves the house.

Decide now which day can go wrong

So here is the assignment, and do it before you go, in the next nine days.

Decide now which one of the four days is allowed to go wrong.

Actually pick it. Say it out loud, or write it down. The second day, say. And decide, in advance and in cold blood, that the second day is permitted to be rain and arguments and somebody being unwell, and that when it happens it does not mean anything.

You are able to grant a day permission to fail before it arrives, and doing that has never once been you expecting the worst. The Spirit of God is with a woman making a decision like that at a kitchen table, and Matthew 6 hands each day its own trouble as a matter of course rather than as a warning.

Here is why this works, and it is not a trick. At the moment, if a day goes wrong, it is evidence. Evidence that you got it wrong, or chose wrong, or should have saved for longer. Once a day is pre approved to go wrong, the same events happen and mean nothing at all, because they were accounted for before you left.

And the other three days are not on trial either, because a set with one day of slack in it is no longer a set where every day has to hold.

You are allowed to build slack into something you paid for over eleven months, and that has never once been carelessness with what you saved. Matthew 6:34 tells us not to take thought for the morrow, and the Holy Spirit is what makes an act of foresight feel like rest rather than like planning.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is going out over a woman nine days out from four days she saved a year for.

You are not going to fail these four days, and eleven months of small unnoticed decisions has never once turned a Tuesday into a test. I am not promising you good weather and I am not promising nobody argues. Matthew 6:34 says sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my saying so who breaks a week into single days a woman can actually hold.

And this, which is the word I came with.

You are allowed to spend one of these four days badly, and a year of saving has never once made a single hour of it a test you could fail. Scripture puts tomorrow's trouble into tomorrow's keeping, which is why the day you are standing in is the only one in your hands, and the Spirit of God goes with the four of you.

Pick the day. Before you leave. Out loud.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Picture I built over eleven months to keep myself going, you got me here and you are not coming with us. Matthew 6:34 says sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof, so by the Holy Spirit I name the day that is allowed to go wrong, in the name of Jesus.
  2. Fear that a bad afternoon costs three months of saving, you were never how any of this is counted. The written word puts each day's trouble into that day's own keeping, and by the Holy Spirit I am done carrying four days at once.
  3. Father, You divided the future into single days and You said each one comes with its own portion. Your word says take therefore no thought for the morrow, so by Your Spirit I put three of these days down, and I stand in the one I am in.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
